Understanding Image Assignment Methods

This tool includes the following methods:

  1. Don't Assign

  2. Assign By Fix SKU

  3. Assign By Image Name

  4. Assign By Folder Name

  5. Advanced Mapping Assign

Each method supports a different workflow, depending on how your images are organized.

Image File Requirements

Before uploading, make sure your images meet these requirements:

  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG (and other common formats)

  • Max file size: 12MB per image

  • Max dimensions: 1500 x 1500 pixels

  • Upload types supported: Single files, multiple files, ZIP files, or folders

  • eBay limit: Up to 24 images per listing

Tip: Compress large images before uploading for faster processing.

Method 1: Don't Assign

This option uploads images to your Image Hosting library without attaching them to products automatically.

When to Use

  • You want to upload images first and assign them later

  • Your images don’t follow any SKU naming pattern

  • You want full manual control

How to Use

  1. Select Don't Assign

  2. Upload your images (drag & drop or browse)

  3. Complete the upload

After Uploading

  • Images appear in your Image Hosting library without an SKU assigned

  • You can manually assign an SKU to them later

  • You can also reference them in imports using their URLs or filenames

Method 2: Assign By Fix SKU

This option assigns all uploaded images to one specific SKU.

When to Use

  • You are uploading multiple images for one product

  • Your image names do not contain the SKU

  • You want to quickly attach images to a known SKU

How to Use

  1. Select Assign By Fix SKU

  2. Enter the SKU in the field provided

  3. Upload your images

  4. All uploaded images will attach to that SKU

Important Notes

  • All images in that upload session go to the same SKU

  • Image order usually follows the upload order

Method 3: Assign By Image Name

This option automatically assigns images based on SKU patterns found in the image file names.

When to Use

  • Your images filenames include your listing's SKU (example: PROD-001-main.jpg)

  • You have consistent naming across products

  • You want automatic assignment without custom mapping rules

How It Works

  • The system reads filenames

  • Extracts a SKU value

  • Matches it to your Listing's SKU

  • Assigns the image to the correct product

File Naming Best Practices

  • Include the SKU clearly in the file name

  • Use separators like hyphens or underscores

  • Add numbers for sequence/order (example: SKU-123-1.jpg, SKU-123-2.jpg)

Method 4: Assign By Folder Name

This option assigns images based on SKU patterns found in folder names.

When to Use

  • Your images are organized into folders named by SKU

  • Each folder contains only one product’s images

  • You want to upload full folders in bulk

How It Works

  • The system reads the folder name

  • Matches the folder name to a SKU

  • Assigns all images in that folder to the matching product

Best Practices

  • Use one folder per SKU

  • Make sure folder names match SKUs exactly

  • Name images inside folders in the order you want displayed

Method 5: Advanced Mapping Assign

This option is the most flexible method and allows custom matching using patterns.

When to Use

  • Your naming convention is not standard

  • You want full control over which file becomes the main image and which become secondary

  • You have complex naming styles (main/side/detail)

How It Works

  • You create rules using {SKU} as a placeholder

  • The system matches uploaded image names to your rules

  • When a match is found, it assigns the image to the correct SKU and image position

Example Patterns

If your images are named like:

  • PROD-001-1.jpg

  • PROD-001-2.jpg

You can map:

  • Primary image: {SKU}-1

  • Image 1: {SKU}-2

Important: The match must be exact, including hyphens, underscores, and capitalization.

Auto Assign Images to Drafts (After Upload)

After uploading your images (or folders) into Image Hosting using the assignment method you selected, you still need to apply those images to your drafts.

To do this:

  1. Go to Listings & Products → 3Dsellers Drafts

  2. Select the draft listings you want to update

  3. Click Bulk Actions → Product Photos & Video → Auto image assign

This will automatically attach the uploaded images to the selected drafts based on the SKU matching rules.

Choosing the Right Assignment Method (Quick Decision Guide)

Use Don't Assign if:

  • You want to upload first and assign later

  • Your files don’t have SKU patterns

Use Assign By Fix SKU if:

  • One upload batch = one product SKU

Use Assign By Image Name if:

  • SKUs appear inside your image filenames

Use Assign By Folder Name if:

  • You use folders named by SKU

Use Advanced Mapping Assign if:

  • You need custom rules for main/secondary image order

Best Practices for Reliable Image Assignment

File Naming Tips

  • Keep naming consistent

  • Always include the SKU when using automatic methods

  • Use separators like _ or -

  • Add numbers or keywords to control image order

  • Avoid special characters that may cause problems

Workflow Tips

  • Start with a small test batch (5–10 images)

  • Confirm the images went to the correct SKUs

  • Then upload larger batches

Troubleshooting

Images Not Assigning?

Check:

  • Filename/folder matches SKU exactly

  • You selected the correct assignment method

  • Your naming pattern is consistent

Images Assigned to the Wrong SKU?

Check:

  • Typos in SKUs

  • Similar SKUs causing confusion

  • Advanced Mapping rules that match incorrectly

Upload Errors?

Check:

  • File size under 12MB

  • Image dimensions under 1500x1500

  • Supported format (JPG/PNG)

  • Avoid very long filenames or special characters

  • Try a smaller batch

Important Notes and Limitations

  • Automatic assignment requires SKUs to exist in your Product Catalog

  • Advanced Mapping requires exact file name matches

  • eBay supports up to 24 images per listing

  • SKU matching may be case-sensitive
