Change eBay Listing Type: Fixed Price to Auction and Back

Switch eBay listings between Auction and Fixed Price in bulk with the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type action, and know what ending and relisting changes.

Written by Amit Fidelman

Yes - you can turn eBay Fixed Price listings into auctions, or auctions into Fixed Price listings, in bulk with the Change Listing Type bulk action in 3Dsellers. Select the listings in Listings & Products → Listings Manager, open Bulk Actions → Pricing & Policies → Change Listing Type, choose Auction or Fixed Price, set the price options and confirm. 3Dsellers does the rest, including the end-and-relist step that eBay requires for live listings.

⚠️ Active listings are ended and relisted. eBay does not let anyone change the format of a live listing, so Change Listing Type ends each active listing and relists it in the new format. The dialog says it plainly: eBay cannot change the format of a live listing, so each listing is ended and relisted: it gets a new item ID, and its watchers, views and sales history are not carried over. eBay listing fees may apply.

Where do I find Change Listing Type in 3Dsellers?

Change Listing Type is a bulk action in the 3Dsellers Listings Manager, in the Pricing & Policies group. It is for eBay listings only, so it does not appear when you are working on another channel.

  1. Click the Listings icon in the left rail to open Listings & Products.

  2. Under Listings Segments, click the segment that holds the listings, for example Active. Do not use All: the action is not available there.

  3. Tick the listings. Bulk Actions is greyed out while no row is ticked.

Where it is on the full 3Dsellers screen, outlined in blue: the 3Dsellers Listings Manager with the Listings icon in the left rail (1), the Active segment (2) and the Bulk Actions button (3), greyed out until a row is ticked.

How do I change the listing type of my eBay listings?

  1. Open Listings & Products → Listings Manager, click a segment such as Active, Ended, Scheduled or 3Dsellers Drafts, and tick the listings you want to convert.

  2. Click Bulk Actions → Pricing & Policies → Change Listing Type. The Change Listing Type dialog opens and starts with The chosen action will be applied to N selected items. Check that the number is right.

  3. Under Convert to, choose Auction (the default) or Fixed Price.

  4. Set the options for that format (explained below).

  5. Read the yellow warning box at the bottom of the dialog. It tells you what happens to the listings in this segment.

  6. Click Change listing type.

  7. A confirmation dialog, Change listing type?, repeats the warning and asks Apply the change to N selected items?. Type YES in the box under Type YES to approve: and click Change listing type. The button stays greyed out until you type YES.

Where it is on the full 3Dsellers screen, outlined in blue: the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog with Convert to (1), Auction duration (2), Start price (3), Buy It Now price (optional) (4) and Listings with a quantity above 1 (5), above the yellow warning box.

To stop before anything changes, click Cancel in either dialog.

What happens to an active eBay listing when I change its type?

eBay does not allow the format of a live listing to change. So when you run Change Listing Type from the Active segment, 3Dsellers reads the listing's current details from eBay, ends the listing and relists it in the new format. The warning box in the dialog says exactly this:

The yellow warning in the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog for Active listings, saying each listing is ended and relisted with a new item ID.
  • The relisted listing gets a new eBay item ID.

  • Its watchers, views and sales history are not carried over to the new listing.

  • eBay listing fees may apply to the new listing.

  • The old listing moves to your Ended segment in 3Dsellers.

  • A listing converted to Auction is listed with a quantity of 1 and with Best Offer switched off.

  • A listing converted to Fixed Price is listed as Good 'Til Cancelled.

Which options does the Change Listing Type dialog have?

The Change Listing Type dialog in 3Dsellers changes with the format you pick under Convert to. The defaults are marked.

How do I change the price while converting?

The price block in the Change Listing Type dialog is called Start price for an auction and Price for Fixed Price. Pick one of three options:

  • Keep the current price - every listing keeps the price it has now.

  • Set price to - every selected listing gets the same price that you type.

  • increase, decrease or multiply current price by a number. For increase and decrease, choose % or a currency amount next to the number. For multiply there is no unit to choose.

The Round prices to 0.99 checkbox is greyed out while Keep the current price is chosen.

The Start price options in the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog, with the increase current price by % row selected and Round prices to 0.99 available.

What is the Buy It Now price on an auction?

When you convert to Auction in 3Dsellers, Buy It Now price (optional) adds a Buy It Now price to the auction. Leave it empty for a plain auction. The info icon next to the field explains the eBay rules:

The Buy It Now price (optional) field in the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog with its info tooltip about the 30% rule and Best Offer.
  • eBay requires the Buy It Now price to be at least 30% above the start price. The dialog itself does not check this, so check your Buy It Now price against the start price yourself.

  • Best Offer is switched off on the auction.

What happens to listings with more than one unit?

An eBay auction sells one unit. In the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog, Listings with a quantity above 1 decides what happens to Fixed Price listings that have more stock:

  • Skip them (default) - those listings are left as they are and reported as skipped.

  • List a single unit - those listings are converted to auctions of one unit. Its info icon reads An auction sells one unit. Listings with variations are always skipped.

Which options do I set when converting to Fixed Price?

Choose Fixed Price under Convert to. The duration, Buy It Now and quantity-above-1 options disappear, and Quantity (optional) appears.

  • Leave Quantity (optional) empty (it shows Keep) to keep each listing's quantity. Its info icon reads Leave empty to keep the quantity of the listing (an auction has one unit).

  • Type a number in Quantity (optional) to set the quantity yourself.

  • The second warning line changes to Live auctions with bids are skipped; they can be converted once they end.

The 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog set to Fixed Price (1), with Price, Quantity (optional) (2) showing Keep, the warning box and the Cancel and Change listing type buttons.

What does Change Listing Type do in each segment?

What Change Listing Type does depends on the Listings Manager segment you run it from. The first line of the yellow warning box in the 3Dsellers dialog always tells you which case applies.

Segment

What 3Dsellers does

Active (and Unsold Active)

Ends each listing on eBay and relists it in the new format

Ended (and Unsold Inactive)

Relists each ended listing on eBay in the new format

Scheduled

Updates the scheduled drafts in place; listings already scheduled on eBay are skipped

3Dsellers Drafts

Updates the drafts in place; the new format applies when they are published

All

Not available: Change Listing Type is greyed out

In the Ended segment, the warning box reads:

Which listings does Change Listing Type skip?

Change Listing Type in 3Dsellers skips a listing instead of failing the whole job. Skipped listings stay as they are and are reported with the reason. A listing is skipped when:

  • It is already in the format you chose.

  • It has already been relisted on eBay.

  • You convert to Auction and it has variations. Listings with variations cannot become auctions.

  • You convert to Auction, it has a quantity above 1, and Skip them is chosen.

  • You convert to Fixed Price and it is a live auction with bids. It can be converted once it ends.

  • It is already scheduled on eBay (in the Scheduled segment).

  • It is an eBay Inventory API listing.

  • It is not an eBay listing.

Where do I see the results?

Change Listing Type is a 3Dsellers bulk action. For how bulk actions work, see Using Listings Bulk Actions – Bulk Edit and Manage Listings in 3Dsellers.

  • In the bulk action report, the action is called Change Listing Type. A skipped listing is marked Skipped or with a forward icon and the reason.

  • Converted active and ended listings come back with a new eBay item ID. The old listing is in the Ended segment.

  • Drafts and scheduled drafts are updated in place, in the new format.

How do I change the type of a listing that was skipped?

The skip reason tells you what to do. A live auction with bids can be converted from the Ended segment once it ends, and a Fixed Price listing with more stock can be converted with List a single unit. A listing with variations cannot become an auction.

As a fallback you can also end and duplicate a listing by hand in 3Dsellers:

  1. In the Active segment, choose End listing from the listing's row actions.

  2. Open the Ended segment and click the listing's Duplicate button (the same idea as eBay's "sell similar").

  3. In the copy, change the listing type and publish it.

See How to copy listings to Drafts for more on copying listings.

Troubleshooting

Change Listing Type is greyed out

You are on the All segment. 3Dsellers shows The action is not available for segment "All", please choose a different segment. Click Active, Ended, Scheduled or 3Dsellers Drafts, tick the listings again and reopen Bulk Actions.

I can't find Change Listing Type in Bulk Actions

Change Listing Type is for eBay listings only, so it is hidden when you work on another channel. Pick your eBay account, tick at least one listing so that Bulk Actions is no longer greyed out, and look under Pricing & Policies, or type auction in Search bulk actions....

The Change listing type button does nothing

In the 3Dsellers Change Listing Type dialog, the button is greyed out when a price option is chosen but the number is empty or 0, or when the Buy It Now price is not valid. In the confirmation dialog it stays greyed out until you type YES.

My listing has a new item ID and lost its watchers

This is how Change Listing Type works for active listings. eBay cannot change the format of a live listing, so 3Dsellers ended it and relisted it. The new listing has a new item ID, and watchers, views and sales history are not carried over. The old listing is in the Ended segment.

A listing ended but was not relisted

If eBay refuses the relist after the listing has ended, the listing is in the Ended segment. Relist it from there. If eBay refused to end the listing in the first place, nothing changed and the listing is still live in its old format.

eBay rejected my Buy It Now price

eBay requires a Buy It Now price at least 30% above the auction's start price. Raise the Buy It Now price, lower the start price, or leave Buy It Now empty.

FAQ

Does changing the listing type keep my eBay item ID?

No - when 3Dsellers changes the type of an active eBay listing, the listing is ended and relisted, so it gets a new item ID. Its watchers, views and sales history are not carried over, and eBay listing fees may apply.

Can I convert an auction that already has bids to Fixed Price?

No - Change Listing Type skips live auctions with bids. Once the auction ends, select it in the Ended segment and convert it there.

Can I convert listings with variations to auctions?

No - listings with variations cannot become auctions, so Change Listing Type in 3Dsellers skips them when you convert to Auction.

Does changing the listing type cost eBay fees?

It can. The 3Dsellers dialog warns that eBay listing fees may apply when listings are relisted, and the 1-day and 3-day auction durations are marked (extra fee). Drafts are only changed in 3Dsellers until you publish them.

What happens to Best Offer when I convert a listing to Auction?

3Dsellers switches Best Offer off on listings converted to Auction. The auction is listed with a quantity of 1.

Can I change the listing type back?

Yes - run Change Listing Type again on the new listing and choose the original format. For an active listing this ends and relists it again, so it gets another new item ID.
