Troubleshooting: VIN Compatibility Lookup

Written by Karolina Santiago

Why can't 3Dsellers find a vehicle from my VIN?

💡 Good to know: A valid VIN does not necessarily mean that 3Dsellers can add the vehicle to your compatibility list. VIN decoding and eBay compatibility are two separate checks. The vehicle must also be available in eBay's compatibility data for the category selected on your listing.

When you use Copy Vehicles List from VINs, 3Dsellers decodes the VIN and checks the decoded vehicle against the compatibility data available for the eBay category selected for your listing.

If no vehicle is added, you may see a message such as:

No Vehicles Found

Decoded, but Model is not in this category's compatibility list.

This does not always mean that the VIN is invalid. The VIN may decode successfully but the vehicle may not be available in the selected eBay category's compatibility list.

1. Check that the VIN is valid

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is normally 17 characters long.

When entering a VIN:

  • Make sure it contains exactly 17 characters.

  • Do not include spaces or punctuation.

  • Make sure all characters were entered correctly.

  • Avoid using the letters I, O, or Q, which are not used in standard VINs.

  • If possible, copy the VIN directly from the vehicle or a reliable vehicle document.

Check Digit Error

You may see an error such as:

Check Digit (9th position) does not calculate properly

The 9th character of a VIN is the check digit used to mathematically validate the VIN.

This message means that the VIN entered does not pass the check-digit calculation.

What to do

  1. Check the VIN again for typing errors.

  2. Pay particular attention to the 9th character.

  3. Make sure you did not accidentally replace a character with a similar-looking number or letter.

  4. Try entering the VIN again.

If the VIN continues to produce the same error, verify it with the vehicle manufacturer or another reliable VIN source.

2. VIN decoded, but no vehicle was found

You may see:

Decoded, but Model is not in this category's compatibility list

This means that 3Dsellers was able to decode information from the VIN, but the resulting vehicle model could not be found in the compatibility list for the eBay category currently selected on the listing.

For example, your listing may be in:

eBay Motors → Parts & Accessories → Car & Truck Parts & Accessories → Steering & Suspension → Power Steering Pumps Parts

The vehicle decoded from the VIN may exist, but eBay may not have that particular vehicle/model available as a compatible vehicle for that category.

What to do

First, check that the listing is using the correct eBay category.

Then:

  1. Open the Vehicles compatibility section.

  2. Check the selected eBay category.

  3. Try searching for the vehicle manually using Make, Model, and Year.

  4. If the vehicle is available manually, add it to the compatibility list.

  5. If the vehicle is not available, the VIN cannot be used to add that vehicle to the compatibility list for the selected category.

Important: A VIN being valid does not guarantee that its decoded vehicle is available in eBay's compatibility database for every category.

3. "Unable to provide information for some of the characters in the VIN"

You may also see a message such as:

Unable to provide information for some of the characters in the VIN, based on the manufacturer submission.

This means that the VIN decoder does not have complete information for some VIN positions based on the data submitted by the vehicle manufacturer.

This does not necessarily mean that the VIN is invalid.

If the vehicle can still be decoded and identified, check whether the resulting vehicle is available in the selected eBay category.

VIN Troubleshooting Checklist

Before contacting support, make sure:

☐ The VIN contains 17 characters
☐ There are no spaces or special characters
☐ The VIN was copied correctly
☐ The 9th character is correct
☐ The listing is using the correct eBay Motors category
☐ The vehicle can be found manually in the compatibility selector
☐ You have checked whether the issue occurs with another known VIN

If the VIN is valid but still cannot be added

If you have confirmed that the VIN is valid but 3Dsellers still cannot add the vehicle, the issue may be related to the vehicle compatibility data available for the selected eBay category, rather than the VIN itself.

When contacting support, provide:

  • The VIN you entered

  • The eBay category

  • A screenshot of the error

  • The listing/item ID, if applicable

This will help us determine whether the problem is related to VIN validation, VIN decoding, or eBay category compatibility.
