Troubleshooting Catalog: Most Common Errors When Publishing to Channel

A comprehensive guide to troubleshooting common errors when publishing your catalog to sales channels, including missing required fields, mapping configuration issues, and data format problems.

Written by Karolina Santiago

Publishing your Catalog products to a sales channel may sometimes result in errors that prevent listings from going live.

This guide explains:

  • What happens when publishing fails

  • Where to find listing errors

  • How to fix them (manually or with AI)

  • The most common causes of publishing failures

  • How to resolve category mapping issues

What Happens When Publishing Fails?

When you attempt to publish a product and the channel returns an error:

👉 The product automatically moves to the Listing Errors section.

You can access it from:

Products → Action Required → Listing Errors

This section displays:

  • All products that failed to publish

  • The affected channel

  • The exact error message

  • Quick actions to fix or republish

How to Fix a Listing Error

Step 1: Open the Error

In the Listing Errors section:

  • Click the channel icon with the error indicator

  • Or click How to fix?

This opens the Quick Editor, where you can:

  • View the exact channel error message

  • See an overview of the mapping template

  • Review the data being sent to the channel

  • Identify missing or invalid fields

  • Make quick corrections

After fixing the issue:

Click Save & Republish

Using AI “How to Fix” (Recommended)

3Dsellers includes an AI-powered “How to fix?” assistant to help you resolve publishing errors quickly.

From Products → Listing Errors, click How to fix? next to the error.

The AI will:

  • Explain the issue in clear terms

  • Identify the exact missing or incorrect fields

  • Provide step-by-step instructions to resolve it

Instead of only showing a technical channel error, the AI translates it into actionable guidance so you can correct the listing faster.

After applying the recommended changes, click Save & Republish.

Most Common Publishing Errors

1. Missing Required Fields

Each sales channel has mandatory item specifics that vary by category.

If any required field is missing or incomplete, the product will fail to publish.

Common Required Fields

  • Brand

  • Model

  • Storage Capacity

  • Color

  • Condition

  • UPC / EAN

  • Price

  • Quantity

  • Description

How to Fix

  1. Open the listing from Listing Errors

  2. Enable Show Required Fields

  3. Fill in all required attributes

  4. Save & Republish

Tip: Required fields are clearly marked in the editor.

Once all the required fields hava value in the Field, click to Save & Republish

Note about “Standalone Value”:

If a field shows “Standalone value active”, it means the value is being manually entered directly in the listing, instead of being pulled from your Catalog attribute mapping.

Standalone values are useful when:

  • You need to quickly fix a required field

  • The Catalog attribute is empty or not mapped

  • A specific channel requires a different value than your default Catalog data

For example, if Model is required and not mapped, you can click Set standalone value and manually enter the correct value (e.g., iPhone 16).

Keep in mind that standalone values apply only to that listing and channel — they do not update your main Catalog product data.

2. Category Mapping Issues (With Real Example)

Category mapping errors occur when your 3Dsellers category is not properly mapped to the sales channel.

Example Error

“Category Mapping for Shopify doesn't contain gid. Please try to remap category or contact support.”

This means the Catalog category exists but is not correctly mapped to Shopify.

Example Scenario

Catalog Category:
Power Steering Pump Parts

Publishing to:
Shopify

Error:
Category mapping missing / invalid gid

How to Fix Category Mapping

Step 1: Identify the Product Category

Check the assigned category (e.g., Power Steering Pump Parts).

Step 2: Go to Category Mapping

Open:

Then:

  1. Select the correct channel (e.g., Shopify)

  2. Search for the category

If you see:

  • ❌ Red status → Not mapped

  • Empty channel category → Missing mapping

  • Warning icon → Incomplete mapping

You must update it.

Step 3: Select the Correct Channel Category

Click Search Category and choose the correct path.

Example:

Vehicles & Parts
→ Vehicle Parts & Accessories
→ Motor Vehicle Parts
→ Motor Vehicle Controls
→ Steering Pumps

Once mapped correctly, the status will turn ✅ green.

Step 4 (Optional): Use AI Auto Map

You can also use:

AI Actions → AI Auto Map

This attempts to automatically match your Catalog category to the most relevant channel category.

Always review suggestions before confirming.

Step 5: Republish

After updating the mapping:

  1. Return to Listing Errors

  2. Click Republish

Important Notes

  • Every Catalog category must be mapped before publishing.

  • If the channel updates its category structure, remapping may be required.

  • Incorrect category selection may trigger additional required item specifics errors.

Pro Tip: If required fields are filled but publishing still fails, check category mapping next.

3. Attribute Mapping Issues

Attribute mapping connects your Catalog fields (Product Properties or Custom Attributes) to the required fields on the sales channel.

Publishing errors can occur even when the product contains the correct data — if the field is mapped incorrectly.

Example: Description Mapped to an Empty Custom Attribute

Let’s say:

  • The product has a value inside Product Property → Description

  • But in the Mapping Template, the channel’s Description field is mapped to:

Custom Attribute → “eBay US description”

If that custom attribute has no value, the channel will receive an empty description — even though the product has a description in the main Product Property.

Result:
The listing may fail because the channel receives no description.

This happens because the system only sends the value from the mapped source — not from other product fields automatically.

How to Fix

You have three options:

Option 1 – Correct the Mapping

  • Update the mapping so Description pulls from:
    Product Property → Description

Option 2 – Add Value to the Custom Attribute

  • Keep the current mapping

  • Add a value to the mapped Custom Attribute

The result:

Option 3 – Use Standalone Value

  • Enter a manual value directly in the listing in the "Standalone value"

  • (Applies only to that specific channel listing)

Using Fallback (Recommended for Flexible Mapping)

Fallback allows you to define a backup value if the mapped source field is empty.

Example:

  • Primary Mapping: Custom Attribute → eBay UK description

  • Fallback: Product Property → Description

If the custom attribute is empty, the system will automatically use the Product Property Description instead.

This prevents empty-field publishing errors without changing your main mapping structure.

When to Use Fallback

Fallback is useful when:

  • You use channel-specific custom attributes

  • Some products don’t have values in those custom attributes

  • You want a safe backup value

  • You want to avoid manual fixes for each listing

Important Notes

  • The system only sends the mapped field — not all product data.

  • If the mapped attribute is empty and no fallback is defined, the channel receives an empty value.

  • Fallback does not override existing values — it only activates when the primary mapped source is empty.

4. Invalid Data Format

Channels enforce strict data formatting rules.

Common Format Errors

  • Incorrect price format (19,99 instead of 19.99)

  • Incorrect Condition format (❌ “Like new condition” / ✅ New other (see details) )

  • Quantity with decimals

  • Exceeding character limits

  • Unsupported special characters

  • Incorrect date format

How to Fix

Review the error message, correct the field format, and republish.

5. Image Issues

Most channels require at least one primary image.

Common Image Errors

  • Missing primary image

  • Invalid format (must be JPG/PNG)

  • Image too small

  • Broken image URL

How to Fix

  • Assign at least one main image

  • Verify image URL works

  • Ensure format and size meet channel requirements
