How to Update or Delete Item Specifics in Bulk with CSV

Use a CSV file to update or remove item specifics across multiple listings at once — including fixing invalid values or clearing a specific field before publishing.

Overview

If you need to update or remove an item specific across many listings at once, you can do it in bulk using a CSV file — no need to open each listing individually. This works for both active listings and drafts.

How it works

Your CSV file needs two things:

  • SKU — to identify which listing to update

  • C:SpecificName — the item specific column, using the C: prefix followed by the exact name of the item specific

To update an item specific

Simply enter the new value in the column for that specific:

SKU

C:Colour

C:Material

SKU001

Blue

Leather

SKU002

Red

Cotton

To delete (remove) an item specific

Enter {DELETE} in the column for that specific. This will clear the value from the listing entirely:

SKU

C:Einbauposition

SKU001

{DELETE}

SKU002

{DELETE}

SKU003

{DELETE}

How to upload the CSV

  1. Prepare your CSV file with a SKU column and one or more C:SpecificName columns

  2. Go to Listings & Products → Listings Manager → CSV Import

  3. Choose to update Active Or Drafts depending on which you are editing

  4. Upload your file

  5. Confirm and apply

Note: No CSV mapping is necessary for item specifics.

Important notes

  • Always include an eBay Category in your CSV when importing item specifics to new drafts — eBay needs the category to organize specifics correctly. For updates to existing listings, the category is already set.

  • The specific name in the column header must match exactly what eBay expects (case sensitive). Use the same name eBay uses in the listing editor.

  • Empty cells are ignored — only rows where you put a value or {DELETE} will be changed.

  • This works for both drafts and active listings.

Use Cases

Use Case 1 — Removing an invalid item specific blocking publication

Scenario: You have dozens of drafts with an item specific (e.g. "Einbauposition") that has multiple values saved, but eBay only allows one. The listings are failing to publish because of this error.

Fix: Export your drafts to CSV, add a C:Einbauposition column, enter {DELETE} for every affected row, and reimport. The invalid specific is cleared from all affected drafts in one go. You can then enter the correct single value manually or via another CSV update.

Time saved: Fixing 50+ drafts individually vs. one 2-minute CSV upload.

Use Case 2 — Correcting a misspelled or wrong value across many listings

Scenario: You imported 200 listings and realized the "Brand" specific was set to "Unbranded" on all of them when it should be your actual brand name.

Fix: Export the listings to CSV, update the C:Brand column with the correct value for each row, and reimport. All 200 listings are updated at once.

Use Case 3 — Removing a specific from a category you no longer use

Scenario: You changed your listing strategy and no longer want to include a specific item specific (e.g. "Compatible Brand") on any of your motor parts listings. It's cluttering your listings and sometimes causing eBay validation warnings.

Fix: Export the relevant listings, add C:Compatible Brand with {DELETE} for all rows, and reimport. The specific is removed from all listings in bulk.

Use Case 4 — Standardizing values across a category

Scenario: Your "Condition" or "Type" item specifics have inconsistent values across listings imported from different sources — some say "New", others "NEW", others "new with tags". eBay is flagging them as low-quality listings.

Fix: Export, clean up the C:Condition column in your spreadsheet (a simple Find & Replace in Excel/Google Sheets handles this), and reimport. All values are standardized instantly.

Use Case 5 — Bulk-updating specifics before a seasonal relist

Scenario: You saved last year's seasonal listings to Drafts. Before relisting, you need to update the "Year" item specific from "2024" to "2025" across 100 drafts.

Fix: Export your seasonal drafts, update the C:Year column, reimport, and publish. Done in minutes.
