3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator: work out your eBay fees, profit and break-even price (free tool)

Work out eBay's fees, your profit and your break-even price before you list, with every fee line explained on a worked $100 sale.

Written by Amit Fidelman

The 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator is a free online tool that works out what eBay will take from a sale and what you will keep. Enter your selling price and the shipping you charge the buyer, add what the item cost you and what shipping costs you, pick your eBay category and your seller settings, and it shows your net profit, your break-even price, what eBay pays you, and an itemised fee breakdown with the total expressed as a share of the whole sale. It recalculates as you type, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no 3Dsellers account.

💡 Open the free eBay Fee Calculator - no account, no card. It is one of the 3Dsellers free selling tools.

Watch the one-minute walkthrough, then use the sections below as a reference:

What the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator does

The 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator models an eBay sale end to end. It applies the final value fee for the category you pick, adds eBay's fixed per-order fee, applies the seller-status discounts and surcharges you tick, adds insertion fees and listing upgrades if you use them, and then subtracts your own costs to give a profit figure.

What it does:

  • Calculates the final value fee from your eBay category and your store level.

  • Adds eBay's per-order fee: 0.30 USD on orders up to 10 USD and 0.40 USD above that, on eBay.com.

  • Includes the shipping you charge the buyer, and US sales tax, in the amount the fee is charged on.

  • Applies the Top Rated Seller Plus discount of 10% off the final value fee, and the Below Standard surcharge of 6% of the sale.

  • Adds insertion fees, a second category, listing upgrades and your promoted listings ad rate as separate lines.

  • Shows your break-even price, what eBay pays out, and your net profit after your own costs.

  • Works the other way round as well: give it a target profit and it solves for the selling price.

What it does not do:

  • It does not show a profit margin percentage or a return-on-investment figure. The only ratio the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator displays is the effective fee rate under Total Fees.

  • It does not connect to your eBay account and does not read your live listings.

  • It does not give selling advice. The page itself states that results are estimates and that pricing is your decision.

⭐ The fee rates are shipped with the page, taken from eBay's own published fee pages and stamped with the date they were last updated. The category tooltip prints that date, so you can always see how current the rates you are using are.

Where do I find the eBay Fee Calculator?

The 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator lives on the 3Dsellers website under Free Tools. There is one page per eBay site. For eBay.com use the US eBay Fee Calculator; for eBay.co.uk use the UK eBay Fee Calculator. You do not sign in, and nothing is gated.

  1. Scroll past the header to the calculator. Your inputs are in the left column and the results are in the right column.

  2. Start typing. There is no Calculate button on desktop - every figure updates as you type.

The screenshot below shows the calculator with a 100 USD sale price and 10 USD of buyer shipping entered. The numbered controls are the calculator mode (1), the selling price (2) and the shipping fee you charge the buyer (3).

Which of the three calculators should I use?

The Choose your calculator dropdown at the top of the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator switches between three modes. The page opens in Calculate My Selling Price, so if you want to enter a price you already have in mind, change the dropdown to Set My Own Price first. Pick the one that matches the question you are actually asking.

The Choose your calculator dropdown open, showing the three eBay Fee Calculator modes

Mode

You enter

It tells you

Use it when

Set My Own Price

The price you plan to list at, plus your costs

Net profit, break-even price and the full fee breakdown

You already know your price and want to know what is left

Calculate My Selling Price

A target profit, as a percentage margin or a fixed amount, plus your costs

The selling price that reaches that profit after eBay's fees

You know the profit you need and want the price to charge

Search eBay Item ID

An eBay item number

A fee breakdown for that live listing

You want to check a competitor's or your own live item

⚠️ Search eBay Item ID needs the free Chrome extension. In a plain browser this mode shows an install prompt instead of a result. Install the eBay Fee Calculator for Chrome to look up items by ID, or use one of the other two modes.

In Calculate My Selling Price mode a Margin? / Fixed? pair of radio buttons appears next to the Desired Profit field. Margin treats your number as a percentage of the selling price; Fixed treats it as an amount in your currency.

What does the eBay Fee Calculator ask for?

The left column of the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator is split into three cards: your price, your costs, and your eBay settings. Each field has a question-mark tooltip that explains what eBay does with it.

Your price and your costs

These four numbers drive everything else. Two of them are money coming in, and two are money going out.

Field

What to enter

Why it matters

Selling Price

The price you will list the item at

The base of the final value fee

Buyer Shipping Fee

The shipping you charge the buyer

eBay charges its percentage on this too, so it is part of the fee base

Item Cost

What you paid for the item

Subtracted from your revenue to give profit; also sets the break-even price

Shipping Cost

What shipping actually costs you

Subtracted from your revenue; the difference against Buyer Shipping Fee is your shipping margin

Sales Tax

The sales tax percentage collected from the buyer, on the US calculator

Added to the fee base, because eBay charges its final value fee on the total including sales tax

In the example below the item cost 40 USD (1) and shipping costs 6 USD (2) to send. The buyer is being charged 10 USD for that shipping, so 4 USD of the shipping charge is margin.

Item Cost and Shipping Cost entered in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator

Your eBay settings

The eBay Info card is where most of the fee variation comes from. Getting the category and the store level right matters more than anything else on the page.

Setting

What it changes

eBay Store Type

The final value fee rate. In most categories on eBay.com the rate is 13.6% on the first 7,500 USD of the sale without a store, and 12.7% on the first 2,500 USD with a Basic store or higher; above either threshold the rate drops to 2.35%

eBay Category

The final value fee rate and its thresholds. Most of the 32 options share the standard rate, but Books, Movies & TV, Music (15.3%), Watches, Parts & Accessories (15%), Jewelry & Watches (15%), Women's Bags & Handbags (15%), Trading cards, CCG, Comics (13.25%), Coins & Paper Money (13.25%), Guitars & Basses (6.7%), NFTs (5%) and Heavy Equipment, Printing Presses, Food Trucks (3%) do not

Second Category

Adds a second insertion fee and repeats the upgrade fees. eBay charges the higher of the two final value fees

Top Rated Seller Plus

Takes 10% off the final value fee

Below Average Status

Adds a Below Standard seller (+6%) line, 6% of the total sale amount

Free Insertion Fee

Whether this listing uses one of your free monthly listings or is charged an insertion fee. It starts at Free, so the worked example carries no insertion fee

International Buyer

Adds an International fee (1.65%) line, 1.65% of the total sale on eBay.com

eBay Promotion

Your promoted listings ad rate, as a percentage of the total sale

Under eBay Listing Upgrades you can also switch on Subtitle, Bold Title, Gallery plus and International List. Each has a fixed price per listing that the tooltip states, and each is charged when you list, whether or not the item sells.

Picking the eBay Category (1) changes the rate immediately, and the total (2) moves with it. The small FVF chip under the selector always shows the percentage being applied, which is the fastest way to see whether your category is charged at the standard rate:

The eBay Category selector in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator and the Total Fees it produces

💡 The three small circles in the card headers are reset buttons - costs, all eBay info, and the listing upgrades. They carry no label on screen, so hover one before you click it.

What do the eBay Fee Calculator results mean?

The right column of the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator has three blocks: a donut chart with the headline figure, a sale overview, and the fee breakdown. All three update on every keystroke.

With a 100 USD sale price, 10 USD of buyer shipping, a 40 USD item cost and 6 USD of shipping cost, in a standard 13.6% category, the results read as follows. Break Even (1) is the price at which you neither lose nor earn, and eBay pays you (2) is the payout before your own costs come out of it.

The donut chart and Overview card in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator, with Break Even and eBay pays you highlighted

Figure

What it is

In the example

Net Profit

Sale price plus buyer shipping, minus eBay's fees, minus your item and shipping costs

48.64 USD

Item Cost

Your item cost plus your shipping cost, added together

46.00 USD

Fees

Everything eBay charges on this sale

15.36 USD

Buyer Shipping

The shipping you charge the buyer, which is revenue to you

10.00 USD

Break Even

The selling price at which money is neither lost nor earned, based on your item and shipping cost

43.71 USD

eBay pays you

Sale price plus buyer shipping minus the selling fees, before your own costs

94.64 USD

Break even is not the same as your cost. Your costs in this example add up to 46.00 USD, but the break-even price is 43.71 USD, because the buyer's 10 USD shipping payment counts towards covering them. Sell below the break-even price and the sale loses money.

How do I read the eBay fee breakdown?

The Fee Breakdown card lists every fee eBay charges on the sale as its own line, then totals them. The small line under Total Fees is the one worth remembering: it restates the total as a percentage of the whole amount the buyer paid.

This breakdown is the example sale in a 15.3% category, with Top Rated Seller Plus on and a 2% promoted listings rate:

The Fee Breakdown card in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator showing every fee line and the total

Line

Amount

What it is

Final value fee (15.3%)

15.15 USD

The category percentage applied to the 110 USD the buyer paid, already reduced by the Top Rated discount: 15.3% of 110 USD is 16.83 USD, less 10%

Top Rated discount (-10%)

-1.68 USD

How much the Top Rated Seller Plus discount saved. It restates the reduction that is already inside the line above, rather than adding a further deduction

Per-order fee

0.40 USD

eBay's fixed fee per order: 0.30 USD up to 10 USD, 0.40 USD above

Promoted Listings (2%)

2.20 USD

The ad rate, charged on the total sale, only when the buyer came through a promoted placement

Total Fees

17.75 USD

16.13% of the 110 sale, and the figure to use: 15.15 + 0.40 + 2.20

⚠️ Do not add the Top Rated discount line to the other lines. When Top Rated Seller Plus is on, the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator shows the Final value fee already net of the 10%, and then shows the discount again on its own line so you can see what it saved. Adding all four lines up gives 16.07 USD, which is 1.68 USD too low. Total Fees - 17.75 USD here - is the amount eBay charges.

The card is grouped as soon as the listing carries a fee you pay before it sells. Set Free Insertion Fee to No, for example, and the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator splits the card into When the item sells and When you list (paid even if it does not sell), with a 0.35 USD insertion fee under the second heading. The UK calculator shows these groups on its default settings, because a UK business seller without a Shop pays an insertion fee on every listing.

Why are my eBay fees higher than the percentage?

Because eBay's percentage is not charged on your price. It is charged on the whole amount the buyer pays, which includes the shipping you charged them and any sales tax eBay collected.

⚠️ This is the single most common surprise in eBay fees. On a 100 USD item with 10 USD of shipping, the final value fee is charged on 110 USD, not on 100 USD. That is why the calculator's Total Fees line says "% of the 110 sale" rather than "% of 100".

It follows that charging the buyer for shipping is not free money: every dollar you add to the shipping charge adds the category percentage to your fee as well. Free shipping with the cost built into the price produces the same fee on the same total, so that choice is about search placement and buyer behaviour, not about avoiding the fee.

How do Top Rated Plus, store level and Below Standard change the fee?

These three settings change the final value fee itself, not the extras, so they move the total more than anything else except the category.

Switching Top Rated Seller Plus to Yes (1) adds a discount line to the breakdown and drops the total (2) immediately:

How do promoted listings and international buyers show up?

Both are charged as a percentage of the total sale, and both get their own line in the breakdown so you can see them separately from the final value fee.

Entering an eBay Promotion rate of 2% (1) adds a Promoted Listings line and lifts the total (2):

An eBay Promotion ad rate entered in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator and the resulting Total Fees
  • Promoted Listings is only charged when the buyer clicked a promoted placement, so the profit figure with an ad rate entered is your worst case for that sale, not a certainty.

  • International Buyer adds eBay's international fee when the buyer is registered outside your own site's country: on eBay.com that is 1.65% of the total sale, which on the 110 USD example adds an International fee (1.65%) line of 1.82 USD.

Is there a calculator for my eBay site?

There is a separate calculator page for each supported eBay site, and each one carries that site's own fee table and currency. The grid of country links sits directly above the calculator, and the page you are on is marked.

Sites with their own calculator: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. Each is at 3dsellers.com/free-tools/<country code>-ebay-fee-calculator, for example uk-ebay-fee-calculator.

What is different on the UK eBay Fee Calculator?

The UK eBay Fee Calculator uses the same engine plus a VAT layer, and it models eBay.co.uk's fee structure, which differs from eBay.com in ways that matter:

  • VAT. A VAT rate selector (20%, 5% or 0%) and an optional custom VAT price. eBay shows UK buyers the VAT-inclusive price and charges its final value fee on the total including VAT, so VAT is part of the fee base.

  • A regulatory operating fee of 0.35% of the sale, charged to business sellers as its own line.

  • Account type instead of store level. The choice is private seller or business seller. On eBay.co.uk the Shop level changes the insertion fee, not the final value fee, so a Basic, Featured or Anchor Shop pays the same percentage as a business seller with no Shop.

  • Volume Pricing. A Buy 2 / Buy 3 / Buy 4 block that recalculates a multi-buy order, with its own discount percentages and an additional shipping fee per extra item.

⭐ UK private sellers pay no eBay selling fees on most categories. If you select Private seller on the UK calculator, the final value fee goes to zero, which is why the private and business figures look so different.

What the eBay Fee Calculator will not do

The 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator is a modelling tool, not a statement of account. It will not:

  • Show a profit margin or ROI percentage. Margin is an input in the Calculate My Selling Price mode; it is never displayed as a result.

  • Read your eBay account, your live listings or your real payouts.

  • Cover auction-specific fees or store-subscription costs. The page describes itself as covering fixed-price, Good 'Til Cancelled listings on eBay.com.

  • Save your inputs. Nothing is stored between visits; reload the page and every field returns to its default.

  • Look up an item by number without the free Chrome extension installed.

  • Replace eBay's own fee pages. Rates change, and the page states the date its rates were taken from eBay.

Troubleshooting the eBay Fee Calculator

I picked my eBay category and nothing changed

That is usually correct rather than a fault. On eBay.com most of the 32 categories in the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator share the standard 13.6% final value fee, so switching between, say, Consumer Electronics and Cameras & Photo gives the same rate and the same total. The options that do change the rate are Books, Movies & TV, Music (15.3%), Watches, Parts & Accessories (15%), Jewelry & Watches (15%), Women's Bags & Handbags (15%), Trading cards, CCG, Comics (13.25%), Coins & Paper Money (13.25%), Guitars & Basses (6.7%), NFTs (5%) and Heavy Equipment, Printing Presses, Food Trucks (3%). The FVF chip next to the category selector always shows the rate being applied, so watch that rather than the total.

Search eBay Item ID asks me to install something

The Search eBay Item ID mode is powered by the free 3Dsellers Chrome extension, which reads the item page for you. Without the extension the field shows an install link instead of a result. Either install the extension or switch the dropdown back to Set My Own Price and enter the numbers yourself.

There is no Calculate button

There is no Calculate button on desktop, by design: the eBay Fee Calculator recalculates on every keystroke, so the figures on the right are always current. On a narrow screen a Calculate button appears, and there it toggles between the input column and the results column rather than triggering the calculation.

What do the small circles in the card headers do?

They are reset buttons, one per card: one clears your costs, one clears all the eBay Info settings, and one clears the listing upgrades. They carry no label on screen, so hover to see the tooltip before clicking.

The payout does not match what eBay actually paid me

Check three things in this order. First, whether the buyer paid sales tax or VAT, because that changes the fee base. Second, whether the sale came through a promoted placement, which adds the ad rate. Third, your store level and Top Rated status, which change the final value fee percentage itself. If all three match and the figure still differs, compare the rate in the FVF chip against eBay's current fee page for that category.

eBay Fee Calculator FAQ

Is the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator free?

Yes - the 3Dsellers eBay Fee Calculator is completely free, with no account, no sign-in and no card. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere; the fee tables are part of the page.

How much does eBay take from a sale?

On eBay.com most categories are charged a final value fee of 13.6% of the total amount the buyer paid, or 12.7% with a Basic store or higher, plus a per-order fee of 0.30 USD on orders up to 10 USD and 0.40 USD above. Some categories are higher or lower, and promoted listings, international buyers and Below Standard status add more. The calculator applies whichever combination you tick.

Does eBay charge its fee on shipping?

Yes - eBay charges its final value fee on the shipping you charge the buyer as well as on the item price, and on sales tax where it applies. That is why the calculator's Total Fees line states the total as a percentage of the whole sale rather than of your listing price.

Is there a separate PayPal or payment processing fee on eBay?

No - there is no separate payment processing fee on eBay any more. Since eBay managed payments, processing is included in the final value fee, and the fixed part of the charge is the per-order fee. If you are calculating fees for a payment you took outside eBay, use the PayPal Fee Calculator instead.

Does the calculator show my profit margin?

No - the eBay Fee Calculator does not display a margin or ROI percentage. It shows net profit in currency, the break-even price and the effective fee rate. Margin appears only as an input, in the Calculate My Selling Price mode, where you can enter your target profit as a percentage instead of a fixed amount.

How do I find the price I need to charge for a target profit?

Switch Choose your calculator to Calculate My Selling Price, enter your target in Desired Profit, and choose Margin? for a percentage or Fixed? for an amount. Fill in your costs and eBay settings as usual and the headline figure becomes the recommended selling price rather than the profit.

Are the fee rates up to date?

The rates are taken from eBay's official fee pages and the page states the date they were last updated - the eBay Category tooltip prints that date. Because eBay changes fees periodically, treat the result as an accurate estimate for that date and check eBay's fee page if you are pricing something unusual or high value.

Can I check the fees on a listing that is already live?

Yes, with the free Chrome extension. The eBay Fee Calculator for Chrome reads the item page you have open - price, shipping and category - and calculates the fees for it, and it is what powers the Search eBay Item ID mode on this page.
